ALZHEIMER'S TEST for WOMEN

If you have family history of memory loss or dementia, or do not know your family history, you may be at risk for Alzheimer's disease. Chances of developing Alzheimer's disease and the average age that disease strikes depend on small changes in genetic code that occur in APOE, APOC1, PCDH11X and several other genes.

Polymorphisms in the PCDH11X gene

  increase Alzheimer's risk in women

xchromosome

This test will find out if any such changes are present in your genetic code (your DNA).

This test is similar to the Basic Test but includes one additional gene known as PCDH11X that is present on X chromosome. Genetic code variations in this gene increase Alzheimer's dementia risk in women(1). The gene is not associated with increased Alzheimer's risk in men and the test has additional advantages only if used in women.

ADULT ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder also known as ADHD (or ADD if there is no hyperactivity) is a disorder of early childhood. Approximately 5-17% of children have this disorder (Cohen et al., 1993). In general, symptoms of this disorder tend to remit with age, particularly after adolescence.

       What is Adult ADHD?

Adultadhd

Nearly 60% of children with ADHD continue to have problems well into their adulthood. ADHD in adults can have many features of and is often mistaken for a personality disorder. These patients have been distractible, inattentive, impulsive, quick-tempered, unable to tolerate stress and restless since childhood. They often have learning disabilities, which may prevent them from achieving career success. Their emotional lability often impairs interpersonal relationships and job stability and may produce depression. They are at risk for drug abuse and alcoholism.

Can ADHD be inherited?

The answer is "Yes". ADHD, in particular the type of ADHD that persists into adulthood ("persistent ADHD") shows a high degree of heritability averaging approximately 70-80% (Faraone et al., 2005).

ADHD genetic test

Approximately 94% of individuals with ADHD carry a particular genetic sequence that can now be accurately tested for thanks to modern genetic analysis technologies. Presence of one or two genetic code letters T on the CLOCK is associated with ADHD. In contrast, a letter C in this location has a protective effect (Kissling et al., 2007). This simple test will determine which sequence is present in your genetic code. The test is more than 95% accurate.

Who would benefit most from taking the test?

If you have been distractible, unable to focus, inattentive, impulsive, quick-tempered, unable to tolerate stress and restless since childhood, or if you notice that it takes too much time for you to learn new material, or if your emotional lability impairs interpersonal relationships and job stability, you should consider taking the test. The presence of one or two Ts (TT or CT) where a C should be (CC) in your CLOCK gene is a positive finding.

Knowing your genetic information can help you better understand your problem and ask your physician or psychologist about adult ADHD and available treatment options. There are numerous treatments available for ADHD today that are safe and effective and could turn your life around.

What is required for the test?

A small sample of your saliva is all that is required for this test. Sample collection takes less than five minutes, is done in the convenience of your home and there is no doctor's office or clinic to visit. Standard orders are ready in 4 to 6 weeks.

How confidential is the test?

Confidentiality protection is our highest priority. We do not share your test results with third parties, employers or insurance companies. We do not participate in research studies and do not store your genetic information on computer servers because computers can be hacked. Please see our complete Privacy Policy for details.

Limitations

The value of genetic tests relies on many factors and probably the most important of them is the size and the ethnic makeup of the reference population. At this time, the ADHD genetic test is most accurate if it is taken by Caucasians of Western European origin and German background. The test provides information about your genetic makeup and is not by itself diagnostic. The diagnosis of ADHD can only be made by a qualified physician or psychologist after the appropriate and thorough evaluation.

Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is a neurological condition that affects primarily memory. Diagnostic criteria are here: behavenet.com/.../.... The disease can be familial or idiopatic (no family history). The majority is late onset (after 60 years), which is associated with naturally occurring variations (called polymorphisms or SNPs - not mutations!) primarily in apolipoprotein (APOE) gene and several other genes. Familial or early onset Alzheimer's occurs between 30 and 60 years of age and is very rare. It is associated with mutations in APP, presenilin-1 and 2 genes (PS1 and PS2). Currently Alzheimer's diagnosis is clinical and is based on exclusion of other causes of memory loss. Testing for APP, PS1 and PS2 mutations is done in specialized laboratories, is costly and typically requires a physician's order. You should discuss this with your physician or a physician who specializes in memory disorders and he or she should be able to order the test, if deemed necessary. You can request Alzheimer's specialist evaluation by contacting us: www.mygenesdirect.com/.../. Tests for late onset Alzheimer's genes can be ordered here: mygenesdirect.com/.../.... We also offer AD gene tests geared for women (mygenesdirect.com/.../...).
